What's in the platform

Observability

Every cluster collects metrics and logs, shows them on dashboards, and raises alerts when something needs attention. Logs can also be forwarded to a logging provider you already use.

Prometheus and Alertmanager

Project: Prometheus and Alertmanager, installed with kube-prometheus-stack · License: Apache License 2.0

Prometheus collects metrics from the cluster, the platform components, and any application that exposes them through a ServiceMonitor or PodMonitor. Alertmanager sends the alerts. Both run with two replicas, and GlueOps adds alert rules for pods in a bad state, node CPU, memory and disk pressure, volumes near capacity, and high error rates. Teams can add their own alert rules on both metrics and logs.

Grafana

Project: Grafana · License: GNU AGPL v3.0

Grafana is where the cluster's metrics and logs are viewed, with sign-in through the platform's single sign-on. GlueOps adds dashboards for platform components, including Argo CD, cert-manager, ExternalDNS, KEDA, OpenBao, Fluent Bit, ingress traffic by host, logs and network monitoring.

Loki

Project: Grafana Loki · License: GNU AGPL v3.0

Loki stores the logs of every container in the cluster in object storage and makes them searchable in Grafana.

Log forwarding with fluent-operator

Project: fluent-operator, which runs Fluent Bit · License: Apache License 2.0

fluent-operator lets teams define Fluent Bit log pipelines as Kubernetes resources. Teams that want to keep an existing logging provider can use it to collect container and system logs and forward them to that provider.

Our documentation uses Datadog as the worked example. Any destination that Fluent Bit supports through fluent-operator can be used; see the fluent-operator output plugins and the Fluent Bit outputs documentation.

Network monitoring

Project: network_exporter · License: Apache License 2.0

network_exporter runs on every node and measures latency, packet loss and the network path to internet hosts and to services inside the cluster, using ICMP, MTR, TCP and HTTP probes. The results are stored in Prometheus and shown on a GlueOps dashboard in Grafana.

GlueOps's own code is released under the Apache License 2.0. Each upstream project keeps its own license, shown in its section. Project names and logos belong to their owners and are shown only to identify each project. Their use does not mean that any project endorses GlueOps.
